25 Jul Life After HDC: Krystina Bowdery
Krystina Bowdery is a 23 year old stylist at the Halifax Shopping Centre Head Shoppe, located in the city’s premier fashion destination. She took the HDC hair program in 2017. Read about her journey!
When did you decide that you wanted to get into hair styling?
I was always interested in hair. My mom and my aunt were both hairstylists, and they always went to hair shows together. Seeing the swag and the photos from the shows always excited me, and after high school I decided it was a perfect lifestyle and career choice for me.
What made you choose the HDC?
HDC has an awesome reputation and it always interested me. I had the opportunity to talk with a few graduates of the program and they all had great things to say about the school.
Did you notice a difference in the amount of hands-on work we offer compared to other schools?
Absolutely. This is a very hands-on career, and what better way to learn than hands-on! I know a lot of other schools focus on textbook work prior to the actual practice of hair styling and cutting. The second day of school we were already cutting hair!
What were the best & the most challenging parts of your education?
The level jumping program at school was the best and most challenging part of the program. It really challenged us to become the best stylist and professional we can.
Was there any hesitation or nervousness on your part about pursuing a career in hair?
Absolutely. Starting a career with zero background knowledge or practice was the most terrifying step. It was also the most rewarding experience in watching what you’re capable of.
What’s your favourite thing about hair?
My favourite thing about doing hair is making people feel their absolute best self. There’s been so many conversations and hugs and tears shed in doing so. I love talking to people and creating a safe space for them to feel comfortable and themselves, all while making their visions come true with how they want the world to see them.
Where do you get your inspo?
A lot of inspiration comes from Instagram. I keep my hair account strictly business and focused on hair trends, stylists and popular brands. I’d have to say my top three influencers are Guy Tang (@guy_tang), Dominick Serna (@domdomhair), and Larisa Love (@larisadoll).
What are the 3 most important skills you need to do your job?
Confidence, passion, and professionalism.
