12 Jan Let me tell you what to expect
by Danielle Macpherson
Danielle Macpherson is the Lead Educator for the hair design program at the HDC. Danielle has had the opportunity to understand how HDC works through the eyes of a student (she graduated from the program in 2005), as well as through the eyes of an instructor. Danielle loves coaching new students and seeing them excel and having those “ah-ha moments” which push them into becoming leading professionals in the salon industry. Danielle wanted to share a brief overview of what being a hair student at HDC entails. Take a read below for her insights on how your journey at HDC will look!
On day one, students will receive their hair kit – THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER!
When you begin your journey as a salon professional, it can be a mixed bag of emotions – ranging from excited, to curious and nervous. However, don’t fret – once you find your stride and get into our classroom you’ll know that you made the right choice! On day one, students will receive their hair kit – THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER! You have all the tools in your kit that you need to use to work on clients – the journey truly begins here. During the first 10 weeks of classes, we teach you the foundations and principals of hairdressing. Within these 10 weeks, you will have already have cut, colored, foiled and blow-dried mannequins and models (I know – whoa!). Once completed, you will be ready to take the step onto our salon floor with real guests.
“HDC has a well-established clientele, so there is lots of opportunity to learn”
Your first day on the salon floor can be intimidating, to put it gently! We recommend you invite your family and friends in for services. We find this helps to break the ice and eases new students into the feeling of doing services on paying guests. However, HDC has a well-established clientele, so there is lots of opportunity to learn! As educators, we are there every step of the way once students are on the salon floor. We have a fantastic support system in place to help students grow. Each student has a coach who is their go-to and will help them one-on-one throughout their program.
At HDC, we have a business-building program in place in which we teach you the importance of maintaining a clientele. We will help to show how to build and maintain relationships, handle difficult situations and how to create ongoing looks for clients. We even help rebook clients for their next visit so they can stay with students during their entire time at HDC!
“learning should be fun”
As educators, we are passionate about creating a high-energy learning environment. We are enthusiastic about education and believe that learning should be fun! We believe strongly in recognition and want to celebrate the wins and accomplishments of all of our students. Every morning at HDC, we have a team meeting where we love to highlight the previous day’s accomplishments. In addition, we have a level jump performance system in place to further recognize the success and growth of our students. The level jump system contains built in goals and specific parts of education that our students must reach. Once students reach the criteria for a 2-month period, we celebrate with a bouquet of flowers and gift certificates. Level jumping is a huge success and students who meet these criteria are highly praised and celebrated!
I hope this has helped…
I hope this high-level overview of a student’s journey at HDC helped with your decision to begin your journey here. I look forward to meeting you!
